Jon Tompkins

My favorite animal would have to be a dog. I love animals in general, so I have a lot of favorite animals, but a dog is my absolute favorite. People can actually interact with them and own one. Also, they show you so much compassion and it’s the only thing in the world that loves you more than they love themselves. Dogs are amazing.

If you could love anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

If I could live anywhere in the world, I would have to chose the Virgin Islands because it would be a very relaxing, soothing and enjoyable place to live. I feel my life would entail very little stress and I could live a happy life. Life in my eyes would be easier.

What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear would be going into the ocean at night. Whenever I look into water at night time, I always begin to get the chills and like shiver because I could never imagine going night swimming in the ocean. I picture the Coast Guard jumping off helicopters in the middle of the ocean with massive waves and I almost want to pass out. It’s the most frightening thing to me in the world. I am a very good swimmer, and am confident that I can’t survive for a while if I were stranded, but just being in the water at night would be the scariest thing for me.

If you could spend the day with any athlete dead or alive, who would it be?

The athlete that I would love to spend the day with would have to be Kobe Bryant. One reason is because it is Kobe Bryant, and who wouldn’t want to meet him? Another reason would be because he is such a positive and motivational guy that is constantly inspiring and talking words of wisdom, and I would love to speak with him about it. He is such a knowledgeable guy and he always is taking lessons he learned in basketball and applying them to the real world. He is such an inspiration to work hard and believe that anything is possible.

1. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

“Huh? How did you get here? I thought I sent you somewhere else.”

2. If you could have an actor play you in a movie, who would it be and why?

The actor I would want to play me in a movie is John Goodman. I think John Goodman and I are both pretty funny people but are also really stand up individuals. We also happen to be around the same size and can both take on serious roles if we have to.

3. If you could spend the day with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?

If I could spend one day with anyone in the world that is not my family, it would be Robin Williams. He was one of my favorite comedians of all time and I think he could make me laugh all day long and I would be so happy because of it. He also seemed to be a nice and very gentle person, so we would get along just fine.

4. What’s your life motto and what do you live by?

My life motto is enjoy life because you only get one shot at it. That helps me focus on the positives all the time even if I’m having a bad day. I live by lessons I have been taught from my family to ensure I am the best person that I can be day in and day out. Without those lessons I’ve learned from my family, I probably wouldn’t be the man I am today.

What is your favorite animal and why?
I have always loved sea turtles. They are free to swim the ocean’s crystal blue waters and explore the word with a free spirit. Turtles also enjoy a simple life, but they show strength and courage at a young age. Having strength to be yourself and accomplish your dreams is something I strive for every day.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would want to live in Calabash, North Carolina. This small beach town is quiet and calming. The people there are one of a kind, and they truly resemble the person I want to be when I am older. They would give you the shirt off their back, even though they may have just met you. Living in close community would be a dream come true for me, and it helps that I would be five minutes from the beach.

If you could spend the day with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I would love to have one more day with my great grandparents. I miss their smiles and stories they used to tell me when I was young. I would want to hear those stories over and over just to spend more time listening to their voices. You never truly know how much you will miss someone until they are gone.

What’s your life motto and what do you live by?
“Life isn’t a dress rehearsal so live it likes it’s the real deal because you never know who is passing you by.” This has been my motto since I was in high school. I live my life every day like it is my last and get to know as many people as I can. I have met so many interesting and influential people that have changed my life in the best ways possible. Always be in the moment and focus on what is in front of you. The future is important but live in the present.

If you could have an actor play you in a movie, who would it be and why?
Will Smith would be the first actor I choose right above Denzel. The thing that sets him apart in my eyes is his ability to make you laugh and cry and be serious all in the course of a two-hour movie.

What’s your life motto and what do you live by?
My life motto is the verse from Philippians 4:13 which reads, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” This has been something I have prayed before games and rough times since I was in high school. It sticks with me so vividly because if I have Him, what can’t I do?

If you could spend the day with any athlete dead or alive, who would it be and why?
The athletes I would choose would be, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Each of these players had a special talent that they brought to the table and each guy was the best when they were at their peak in the NBA. I would love to learn a thing or two on how to win and how to dominate the competition like they did.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
“I’m glad you stayed the course. Now go and see your family again.”

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

If I could live anywhere in the world it would be Long Beach New York. Long Beach has great beaches and is only 45 minutes outside of New York City, so you get the best of the beach life and city life. Also, the community of people in Long Beach are real people, everyone really cares about the town.

If you could be a one-hit wonder band, who would you be?

If I could be a one-hit wonder band it would be Lou Bega’s Mambo No. 5.

What’s your life motto and what do you live by?

My life motto is “If you aren’t f*cking up every once in awhile you aren’t doing it right.”

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

If heaven exists I would like to hear God say “Hows it going Mr. Candon? Budlights are down the hall and to the right. Have fun.”

Senior ’17 Business Communication

I am not part of any organization on campus, but I am an event planner member of Stevenson’s Event Planning course. I participate in planning two university events during the 16-weeks period.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would like to live in California. I do not know where specifically, but I would like to switch from the East Coast to the West Coast. I want to go somewhere where I can have a new start and start a new chapter in my life. Meet new people. Start a new career at a new company. Just a fresh start.

What’s your life motto and what do you live by?

“Do not regret anything you do” is a motto I live by. If I start regretting my actions, then I will start to think about the time and work I wasted. I do not want to think I wasted my time and hard work on anything. If I had a bad experience, I would turn it around and make a lesson out of it. By having regret, it makes me have doubt and I do not want any doubt in life. I think before I do anything. I think before say. I just get rid of any negativity that would make me question my life choices.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

Turn back, you’re not done yet.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? What’s the worst piece of advice you have ever received?

The best advice I received was from my father. “Tomorrow will always come, so take it one day at a time.” I had a rough point growing up and my saw where I was heading. He would see me stress and worry about minor to major things. He simply told me to take everything slowly and what I cannot do today can always be done tomorrow. His advice helped me to stay calm and collected while handling any pressure in my life. The worst advice I received was from my grandfather. “Sometimes you have to follow the path that is paved for you.” I do not like the idea that my life is planned out for me. I like to make my own choices and create my own path. If I fail then I can blame myself and not shift blame onto someone/something else.
